Rio Tinto Ltd.’s Argyle Mine in the Kimberley region of Western Australia is the largest supplier of diamonds by volume and the only mine of its type in the world. The Argyle Mine is famous for exquisite natural colored diamonds. It produces some of the rarest investment grade diamonds in the world, and is the world’s leading supplier of pink, champagne and cognac diamonds.
Argyle Mine’s signature stone is the extremely rare pink diamond. Argyle produces approximately 95% of the world’s supply of these extremely rare and highly desirable stones. The finest of these pink diamonds are selected and sold exclusively at Argyle’s international invite-only Pink Tender. Only a select few of the world's leading diamantaires and diamond jewelers are invited. Carats Investments has been invited to this highly exclusive tender for the past six years and is the only Canadian broker invited. Carats Investments was one of only 17 successful bidders at the 2007 tender, securing 10% of the available stones.
The Argyle Mine is scheduled to close in 2018. Production has already moved underground, reducing Argyle’s yearly yield by 50%. Total run out is expected by 2018. As a result, natural colored diamonds are seeing a significant increase in value and represent a secure and lucrative investment.
Interesting highlights:
- Argyle has produced more than 670 million carats since production began, ranging from gem quality to near-gem and industrial stones.
- In its peak year, 1994, the Argyle Mine produced more than 42.8 million carats, or about 43% of global production.
- Only 5% of Argyle Mine’s diamonds are of gem quality, a small percentage of which are of investment grade.
- All diamonds purchased from the Argyle Mine are accompanied by certificates of origin and authenticity.
Carats Investments is proud to be a successful bidder at Argyle’s Pink Tender year after year.
