Origin of Champagne Diamonds

Carats' stunning collections of Rio Tinto Champagne Diamonds come directly from the rugged and remote East Kimberly region of Western Australia, The Argyle Mine. Only one in 10,000 diamonds is a colored gem ensuring their enduring uniquness. Champagne diamonds are considered plentiful compared to their tinted relatives but like Pinks, the supply remains a limited resource.

Champagne Diamonds FAQ's

Q: Is the color in champagne diamonds natural?
A: Yes. Diamonds are naturally found in more colors than most other gemstones. The formation of natural color in diamonds requires unimaginable heat and pressure exerted on carbon crystals encased in rock. The presence of trace elements in the carbon crystal's lattice structure found in various configurations account for the variety of color. Tremendous heat and pressure on a diamond deep in the earth can abnormally compress and distort this lattice structure, creating red, pink, purple or brown stones.

Additionally, if nitrogen, boron, hydrogen or another elements interacts with carbon atoms during a diamond's creation, the stone's color can be altered. Radiation may also affect a diamond's color.

Q: Where do champagne diamonds come from?
A: Rio Tinto's Argyle Diamond Mine in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia is the world's largest producer of champagne diamonds. The East Kimberley is a land of rugged mountain ranges, deep gorges and arid savannah within which lie pipes of lamproite, diamond-bearing ore.

The Australian Aborigines who are traditional owners of the land in the East Kimberley believe that the diamonds were formed when a barramundi fish escaped through a spinifex net. According to that myth, the colors of the diamonds mined from the red earth of the region come from different parts of the barramundi.

Rio Tinto's Argyle Diamond Mine operates in partnership with local communities within this region, ensuring that it provides a legacy of stronger, healthier communities, and that the rights of traditional owners are observed and respected. For more information about the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Q: How are champagne diamonds graded?
A: When selecting a champagne diamond, consider the 4 C's. The particular combination of color, clarity, cut and carat determines the value of a diamond. More info about the 4 C's.

Q: What jewelry designs best complement champagne diamonds?
